Ibn al-Jauzi has drawn the following parallel,

The likeness of Iblees with a pious person and with one of weaker faith is like the [following two men]: A man who sits to eat a meal. A dog comes to partake of the food. The man shouts at the dog and he flees. And there is another man for whom a dog comes to eat from his plate and he also shouts at the dog, but it has no affect. The first man is like a pious man whom Satan comes to but is repelled by his invocation. The second is like one whose faith is mixed with evil, when he seeks refuge in Allah, Satan does not leave him. And we seek refuge in Allah from Satan.’
